Drug intelligence / Profile preview
AVAT-021 is a **solid oral capsule formulation of synthetic cannabidiol (CBD)** developed by Avata Biosciences as a patient-friendly pharmaceutical alternative to oil-based cannabidiol therapies like Epidiolex. Its proprietary synthetic technology enables high-dose CBD (over 200mg) to be delivered in size 0 capsules, improving manufacturing scalability and dosing convenience, especially for neurological conditions. AVAT-021 demonstrated bioavailability and tolerability comparable to Epidiolex in Phase 1 clinical trials and is being advanced for treatment-resistant epilepsy (especially focal epilepsy/adult focal-onset seizures) and schizophrenia, with plans for expansion to other neurological disease indications. It is being developed under the US FDA 505(b)(2) pathway, using Epidiolex as the reference product, and is currently partnered for development and commercialization in Asia (excluding China and India) with Oceanus Bio. Unlike many prior efforts, AVAT-021's formulation achieves pharmacologically active CBD levels in a solid-dose format, potentially improving access and adherence compared to current liquid formulations[1][4][5][6][7][9][10][11][12].
