Drug intelligence / Profile preview
AVAT-121 (formerly SAP-021, and also referred to as AVAT-021) is an orally administered, solid-dose capsule formulation of synthetic, pharmaceutical-grade cannabidiol (CBD) being developed by Avata Biosciences (formerly Sapient Therapeutics). Utilizing Avata's proprietary water-soluble cannabinoid formulation technology, AVAT-121 is designed to improve the bioavailability and scalability of CBD compared to existing oil-based formulations like Epidiolex. The drug is currently in Phase 1 clinical development for the treatment of adult focal epilepsy and schizophrenia, the latter in partnership with the University of Oxford. AVAT-121 acts as a multimodal modulator of the endocannabinoid system and other neurological pathways, targeting cannabinoid receptors (CB1 and CB2), GPR55, TRPV1, and ENT1 to reduce neuronal hyperexcitability and neuroinflammation.
