Overview
Avatrombopag is an orally administered, small molecule thrombopoietin (TPO) receptor agonist used to treat thrombocytopenia (low platelet count) in adults with chronic liver disease who are scheduled for a medical or dental procedure, and in patients with chronic immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) who have not responded adequately to previous treatments. It works by stimulating the proliferation and differentiation of megakaryocytes from bone marrow progenitor cells via activation of the TPO receptor (also known as c-Mpl), leading to increased platelet production without increasing platelet activation. Avatrombopag is not competitive with endogenous thrombopoietin for binding to the TPO receptor and has additive effects on platelet production. The drug was developed as an alternative to platelet transfusions in patients at risk of bleeding due to low platelets[1][2][3][6][8].
