AVD-104 is an investigational intravitreal glycomimetic nanoparticle developed by Aviceda Therapeutics for the treatment of geographic atrophy (GA) secondary to age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and diabetic macular edema. It is designed as a glycan-coated nanoparticle that modulates inflammatory cellular and complement pathways through a dual mechanism of action. Specifically, AVD-104 directly inhibits damaging phagocytic/inflammatory macrophages, resolves VEGF-producing macrophages, repolarizes activated microglia to their neuroprotective state via Siglec receptor engagement, and binds complement factor H to reduce overactivation of the complement cascade (notably C3 amplification). Clinical trials have shown that AVD-104 is well tolerated with no drug-related ocular or systemic serious adverse events reported. The drug has demonstrated significant reduction in GA lesion progression and improvement in visual acuity compared to historical standard-of-care outcomes[1][2][4][5][6].
