Overview

Avena sativa is the scientific name for the common oat, a species of cereal grass whose seeds, stems, and leaves are used nutritionally and medicinally. Medicinal extracts are prepared from the aerial parts, especially harvested while green, and are rich in phytochemicals such as triterpene saponins (avenacins), phenolic acids, polyphenols, and genus-specific avenanthramides[1][2][4][6]. These compounds are thought to exert cellular and physiological effects, including modulation of neurotransmitter systems (potentially through inhibition of monoamine oxidase B and phosphodiesterase 4), interactions with neurotransmitter receptors, and influence on glucocorticoid and estrogen systems[1][6]. Avena sativa extracts and oat straw preparations are traditionally used to relieve mild symptoms of mental stress, improve sleep, and may offer benefits for cognitive function, cardiovascular health, metabolic control, skin disorders, and digestive health[2][3][4][6].
