Overview
Avena sativa pollen extract is an allergenic extract derived from cultivated oat pollen. It is used for the diagnosis (via skin testing) and treatment (via immunotherapy) of allergies to oat pollen. [1, 9] Marketed under the brand name CENTER-AL by ALK-Abello, Inc., it is a non-standardized biologic product. [1, 4] The therapeutic formulation is an alum-precipitated suspension administered via subcutaneous injection. [5, 6] The goal of immunotherapy is to desensitize the patient's immune system to the allergen, thereby reducing the symptoms of the allergy upon natural exposure. [12, 14]
