Overview

Avenanthramide B is a naturally occurring phenolic alkaloid found primarily in oats (*Avena sativa*). It is a conjugate of ferulic acid and 5-hydroxyanthranilic acid. Biologically, it acts as a potent anti-inflammatory agent by inhibiting the **NF-κB** (nuclear factor kappa B) pathway, thereby reducing the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines. It also exhibits antioxidant, anti-itch, and anti-melanogenic properties, the latter through the inhibition of tyrosinase and melanogenesis. While it is a key active component in FDA-approved colloidal oatmeal skin protectants used for conditions like atopic dermatitis and eczema, avenanthramide B itself is primarily utilized as a research tool and analytical standard in studies concerning cardiovascular health (atherosclerosis), oncology, and dermatology.
