Overview
AVERSA Buprenorphine is an abuse-deterrent transdermal system being developed by Nutriband for the management of chronic pain. The product utilizes the proprietary AVERSA technology, which incorporates aversive agents into the transdermal patch to discourage misuse, diversion, and accidental exposure through taste aversion. The active pharmaceutical ingredient, buprenorphine, is a partial agonist at the mu-opioid receptor and an antagonist at the kappa-opioid receptor. This pharmacological profile provides effective analgesia with a ceiling effect on respiratory depression and a lower potential for physical dependence compared to full opioid agonists. The AVERSA technology is designed to make the patch unpalatable if placed in the mouth, addressing a common route of opioid patch abuse.
