Overview

**Avian-derived hyaluronan** is a form of hyaluronan (hyaluronic acid) extracted from avian sources, most commonly rooster combs. It is used primarily for intra-articular injection to treat pain associated with symptomatic knee osteoarthritis. Its therapeutic effect is thought to stem from its ability to supplement endogenous synovial fluid, improving joint lubrication, shock absorption, and possibly exerting anti-inflammatory effects within the joint. Avian-derived hyaluronan products are typically high molecular weight, non-cross-linked or cross-linked polysaccharides, and differ from microbial fermentation-derived hyaluronan in production method, protein impurity profile, and immunogenic potential. Commercially available products include injectable solutions such as Supartz, Hyalgan, and Synvisc (the latter being cross-linked). Avian-derived hyaluronan has demonstrated similar efficacy and biocompatibility to non-avian products in animal models and clinical reports, but avian origin may confer a slightly higher risk of local adverse events, particularly in individuals with avian protein allergies[1][3][5][7].
