Overview

Avibactam is a non-β-lactam β-lactamase inhibitor used in combination with ceftazidime for the treatment of complicated intra-abdominal infections, complicated urinary tract infections (including pyelonephritis), and hospital- or ventilator-acquired pneumonia. It works by inactivating certain β-lactamases (Ambler class A, including Klebsiella pneumoniae carbapenemases; Ambler class C; and some Ambler class D β-lactamases) through a unique covalent and reversible mechanism. This action protects ceftazidime from degradation by these enzymes, restoring its activity against resistant Gram-negative bacteria. Avibactam does not possess antibacterial activity on its own but extends the spectrum of ceftazidime when used together[1][5][6][8].
