Overview

AVICOD is an oral antiviral drug containing 200 mg of favipiravir, manufactured by Pharma Plant in Turkey. Favipiravir is a prodrug that, once inside host cells, is metabolized into its active form, favipiravir-ribofuranosyl-5'-triphosphate (favipiravir-RTP). This active metabolite selectively inhibits the viral RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp) enzyme, which is essential for viral RNA replication. It is believed to act by mimicking purine nucleosides, leading to either premature termination of viral RNA synthesis or the induction of lethal mutagenesis, resulting in nonviable viral progeny. Favipiravir was initially approved in Japan for the treatment of influenza and has since been repurposed and approved for the treatment of COVID-19 in several countries, including Turkey.
