Overview

Avidin is a basic glycoprotein, also known as a tetrameric biotin-binding protein, originally isolated from egg whites of birds, reptiles, and amphibians. It consists of four monomer units, each capable of binding one molecule of biotin with extremely high affinity. This strong non-covalent interaction between avidin and biotin is widely exploited in biotechnology for purification and detection strategies such as ELISA, Western blotting, immunohistochemistry, and affinity purification[5][7]. In clinical settings, avidin has been investigated as an agent to neutralize the effects of certain long-acting anticoagulant drugs (such as idrabiotaparinux) by forming an inactive complex with their biotinylated forms; this allows rapid reversal in cases of bleeding or overdose[1][4]. Avidin-based nanoparticles are also being explored for targeted drug delivery systems due to their ability to regulate payload release via stimulus-responsive mechanisms[2][3]. The protein itself has demonstrated antimicrobial and bacteriostatic properties.
