Overview

Avilamycin is a veterinary antibiotic belonging to the orthosomycin class, produced by Streptomyces viridochromogenes. It is primarily used in chickens, turkeys, pigs, and rabbits to control bacterial enteric infections and for growth promotion in swine and poultry. Avilamycin exhibits strong antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive bacteria such as Clostridium perfringens, Bacillus spp., Staphylococcus aureus, Listeria monocytogenes, Enterococcus spp., and others. Its mechanism of action involves inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis through a novel double mechanism—blocking both the initiation steps (by interfering with formylmethionyl-tRNA binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit) and late stages of protein synthesis (by preventing accommodation of aminoacyl-tRNA at the A site on the ribosome). Avilamycin binds uniquely to both 30S and 50S ribosomal subunits at sites distinct from other antibiotics in its class, resulting in minimal cross-resistance with other protein synthesis inhibitors[1][2][5][6][8].
