Overview

Aviptadil is a synthetic form of human vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP), which was discovered in 1970. It has potential anti-cytokine, anti-inflammatory, and immune-regulatory activities. VIP is highly localized in the lungs (70%) and binds with alveolar type II (AT II) cells via VPAC1 receptors. Aviptadil has been investigated for various inflammatory conditions, including acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and most recently for COVID-19 respiratory failure. In COVID-19 treatment, aviptadil works by upregulating surfactant production, inhibiting cytokine synthesis, preventing cytopathy, and blocking replication of the SARS-CoV-2 virus in pulmonary cells.
