Overview

Avitene is a brand-name, absorbable microfibrillar collagen hemostat used to control bleeding during surgical procedures. It is derived from purified bovine collagen and functions by accelerating clot formation at the site of application. The mechanism involves enhancing platelet aggregation and promoting the release of proteins that form fibrin, resulting in rapid hemostasis. Avitene is indicated for use in a wide range of surgeries—including neurosurgery, dental surgery, liver and spleen operations—especially where traditional methods like sutures or cauterization may not be sufficient. It conforms to irregular spaces, adheres well to tissue, and can be easily removed with irrigation or suction if necessary[1][2][3][4][5][6].
