Avobenzone is a synthetic dibenzoylmethane derivative that serves as a broad-spectrum Ultraviolet A (UVA) filter in sunscreen formulations. It is one of the few chemical filters capable of absorbing the full range of UVA radiation (320–400 nm), including the longer UVA I wavelengths. Because avobenzone is photolabile and degrades upon exposure to sunlight, it is typically stabilized in commercial products using ingredients like octocrylene, oxybenzone, or diethylhexyl syringylidenemalonate. It is widely utilized in topical preparations to prevent sunburn, reduce the risk of skin cancer, and mitigate photoaging.
