Avocadene is a **polyhydroxylated fatty alcohol** (17-carbon, also known as 16-heptadecene-1,2,4-triol) classified within the acetogenin family and is predominantly found in avocado (Persea americana). Its structure is characterized by multiple hydroxyl groups and an unsaturated fatty acid tail, allowing it to modulate mitochondrial metabolism. The primary **mechanism of action** is the inhibition of fatty acid oxidation (FAO), specifically through targeting mitochondrial enzymes such as very long-chain acyl-CoA dehydrogenase (VLCAD). This leads to disruption of energy metabolism and induction of selective apoptosis in cancer cells, particularly acute myeloid leukemia (AML), while sparing healthy cells. Preclinical studies have also suggested additional roles in reversing insulin resistance linked to obesity, exhibiting antimicrobial properties against certain Gram-positive bacteria, and possibly impeding viral replication. Research is ongoing into its applications as an anti-cancer and immunomodulatory agent, but it is not currently an approved pharmaceutical and remains under investigation for these indications[1][4][9].
