Overview

Avoplacel is a placenta-derived, mesenchymal-like stromal cell therapy being developed by Pluri as an intramuscular treatment to enhance hematopoietic recovery and mitigate acute radiation syndrome and related bone marrow failure states.[1][6][7] The product consists of expanded adherent stromal cells derived from human placenta that secrete a broad panel of pro-hematopoietic and immunomodulatory factors, acting as a “pan-cytokine” support to stimulate bone marrow function and promote recovery of all three blood cell lineages (red cells, platelets, and neutrophils).[1][6][7] In preclinical radiation models, avoplacel improved survival and restored blood counts when administered either prophylactically or up to 48–72 hours post-exposure, and in Phase 1 trials in patients with incomplete hematopoietic recovery after hematopoietic cell transplantation it increased blood cell counts and reduced transfusion requirements with a favorable safety profile.[1][2][6][7] The program has received FDA orphan drug designation and IND clearance for use as a medical countermeasure for radiation sickness in nuclear events and is being positioned for potential stockpiling as a national radiation emergency countermeasure.[1][6]
