Overview

Avotermin is a recombinant human transforming growth factor beta 3 (TGFβ3), developed as the first in a new class of regenerative medicines aimed at reducing scarring following surgery or trauma. It is administered by intradermal injection into wound margins and has demonstrated significant improvements in scar appearance compared to placebo in multiple clinical trials. Avotermin works by modulating the cellular and molecular mechanisms involved in wound healing, promoting scar-free healing similar to that observed during early embryonic development. The drug was primarily developed for prophylactic improvement of cutaneous scars after surgical incisions or injuries[2][6][8]. Clinical studies have shown it to be safe and well tolerated[7].
