AVP-21D9 is a fully human IgG1 monoclonal antibody developed as an anthrax antitoxin. It specifically targets the protective antigen (PA) component of the *Bacillus anthracis* toxin, neutralizing its ability to facilitate entry of lethal factor (LF) and edema factor (EF) into host cells. By binding to PA, AVP-21D9 prevents assembly of the toxin complex and blocks cellular intoxication, thereby protecting against anthrax toxemia. Preclinical studies demonstrated that a single dose could provide immediate protection in animal models challenged with lethal doses of anthrax toxins, and it was well tolerated in healthy human volunteers with no serious adverse events reported. The drug was originally discovered and developed by Avanir Pharmaceuticals using its Xenerex technology[1][4][6].
