Avrina (NF-kappaB Decoy) is a synthetic double-stranded decoy oligonucleotide therapeutic designed to treat inflammatory diseases, specifically atopic dermatitis. It functions by mimicking the specific DNA binding sequence of the transcription factor NF-kappaB. By acting as a molecular sink, the decoy sequestered NF-kappaB proteins, preventing them from binding to endogenous promoter regions in the nucleus and thereby inhibiting the transcription of pro-inflammatory cytokines and adhesion molecules. Originally developed by Corgentech (which later merged with AlgoRx to form Anesiva), the drug was evaluated in Phase 1/2 clinical trials for mild-to-moderate atopic dermatitis. In 2008, Anesiva out-licensed the worldwide rights for the program to Transcription Factor Therapeutics (TFT).
