Overview
Avugane is a topical formulation of valproic acid, a small molecule histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitor, developed by TopoTarget A/S for the treatment of mild to moderate acne vulgaris. By inhibiting HDACs, Avugane modulates the expression of genes involved in inflammatory responses and keratinocyte proliferation, which are key factors in the pathogenesis of acne. The drug reached Phase II clinical development, where it was tested in randomized, placebo-controlled trials to evaluate its efficacy and safety at various concentrations. However, development appears to have been discontinued as it no longer appears in active pipelines.
