Overview

AVX101 is an investigational vaccine developed by AlphaVax targeting clade C HIV strains, which are predominant in southern Africa. It is based on an alphavirus vector platform and expresses a nonmyristoylated form of the HIV-1 Gag protein. The vaccine was evaluated in two double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trials (HVTN 040 and HVTN 059) in healthy HIV-1-uninfected adults in the United States and Southern Africa. The primary objective was to assess safety and tolerability; secondary objectives included evaluation of immunogenicity through various immune response assays. Both trials were halted prematurely due to issues with vaccine stability and documentation with the contract manufacturer[1][5].
