AWP-09VDB-S is an orally bioavailable prodrug of zanamivir, a potent neuraminidase inhibitor used for the treatment and prophylaxis of influenza A and B. Developed by Awept in collaboration with Clinical Network Services (CNS), AWP-09VDB-S was designed to address the poor oral bioavailability of zanamivir, which currently requires administration via inhalation (as Relenza). By converting zanamivir into a prodrug, AWP-09VDB-S enables systemic absorption following oral administration, potentially improving patient compliance and expanding the clinical utility of zanamivir. The compound has been evaluated in a Phase I clinical trial to characterize its safety, tolerability, and pharmacokinetic profile in healthy volunteers under both fed and fasted conditions.
