Overview
AX-8 is a potent and selective small molecule agonist of the transient receptor potential melastatin 8 (TRPM8) ion channel, developed by Axalbion for the treatment of chronic cough[1][2][5][6][7]. It is formulated as an orally disintegrating tablet (ODT) placed on the tongue and acts topically to normalize upper airway sensitivity in patients with chronic cough by activating TRPM8-expressing sensory fibers[1][4]. This mechanism aims to decrease coughing frequency and throat irritation. Clinical studies have shown that AX-8 reduces cough frequency and improves patient-reported outcomes in individuals with refractory or unexplained chronic cough[4][7]. The drug has also been explored preclinically for dry eye syndromes[5].
