AXA-NK02 is an allogeneic, "off-the-shelf" natural killer (NK) cell therapy derived from human embryonic stem cells (hESCs). Developed by researchers at the Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, it is currently being investigated in early-phase clinical trials for the treatment of refractory lupus nephritis and systemic lupus erythematosus. The therapy leverages the innate cytotoxic and immunomodulatory properties of NK cells to potentially reset the autoimmune response and reduce renal inflammation in patients who have failed standard treatments. By utilizing hESCs as a starting material, AXA-NK02 aims to provide a standardized, scalable, and readily available therapeutic product, overcoming the logistical and variability challenges associated with autologous or primary donor-derived cell therapies.
