Axalimogene ciloleucel is an investigational cancer immunotherapy consisting of autologous T cells genetically engineered with a chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) to recognize and attack tumor cells, developed for the treatment of solid tumors such as gynecologic cancers. It is designed to redirect patient T lymphocytes against tumor-associated antigens, leading to activation, proliferation, and cytotoxic killing of antigen-expressing cancer cells, with associated cytokine release and durable immune surveillance. The product is manufactured individually for each patient by isolating peripheral blood T cells, modifying them ex vivo with a viral vector encoding the CAR construct, expanding them, and then reinfusing them following lymphodepleting chemotherapy.
