Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Aximris XR is an extended‑release, abuse‑deterrent oral formulation of oxycodone hydrochloride developed by Intellipharmaceutics for the management of pain severe enough to require daily, around‑the‑clock, long‑term opioid treatment when alternative options are inadequate.[7][10][13] It uses a controlled‑release technology designed to provide bioequivalent systemic exposure to OxyContin while incorporating physical and chemical barriers that increase viscosity when tampered with in aqueous solution, resist heat manipulation for vaporization/smoking, and limit dose dumping in the presence of alcohol, with the aim of reducing intravascular and other non‑oral routes of abuse.[10][13] Despite these features, FDA advisory committees in 2017–2019 voted overwhelmingly against approval over concerns that any incremental improvements in IV abuse deterrence might be offset by susceptibility to intranasal abuse and the broader public‑health risks of introducing another extended‑release opioid analgesic.[7][10]
