Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Ayahuasca tea is a traditional psychoactive botanical brew native to the Amazon basin, prepared from the vine *Banisteriopsis caapi* and the leaves of *Psychotria viridis* (or other DMT-containing plants). It is being developed as a standardized botanical drug product by Sacred Medicines and the Advanced Integrative Medical Science (AIMS) Institute. The tea contains two primary active components: N,N-dimethyltryptamine (DMT), a potent psychedelic, and harmala alkaloids (such as harmine, harmaline, and tetrahydroharmine), which act as reversible monoamine oxidase A (MAO-A) inhibitors. The MAO inhibition prevents the peripheral degradation of DMT, allowing it to reach the central nervous system and exert its effects. Ayahuasca tea is being investigated in the United States for the treatment of treatment-resistant depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), substance use disorders, and existential distress in late-stage oncology patients.
