Overview

Azadirachta indica (commonly known as neem) is a tree native to the Indian subcontinent and widely grown in tropical and subtropical regions. Extracts from its leaves, seeds, bark, and other parts are used in traditional medicine for a variety of purposes including treatment of malaria, diabetes, worms (anthelmintic), cardiovascular diseases, skin diseases, dental health (oral dentifrice), lice treatment and as an insecticide or insect repellent[1][2][3][4]. Neem contains numerous bioactive compounds such as azadirachtin (noted for its insecticidal properties), nimbin, nimbidin, nimbolide (with anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial effects), quercetin (antibacterial/antifungal activity), beta-sitosterol and various limonoids[3][5]. The mechanism of action is complex due to the presence of multiple active phytochemicals; reported activities include antioxidant effects and modulation of genetic pathways involved in inflammation and infection[3]. Clinical evidence supporting specific therapeutic uses is limited. Neem products are manufactured primarily by extraction from plant material; they are not developed by pharmaceutical companies but rather produced by natural product manufacturers.
