Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Azadirachta indica leaves extract is a botanical preparation derived from the leaves of the Azadirachta indica tree, commonly known as neem. Neem is native to the Indian subcontinent and has been used for centuries in traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda and Unani. The leaf extract contains over 140 bioactive compounds including nimbin, nimbidin, nimbolide, quercetin, ß-sitosterol, limonoids (such as azadirachtin), and others[1][4][6]. These constituents confer a wide range of pharmacological activities. Mechanistically, neem leaf extracts exhibit immunomodulatory effects by modulating immune responses; anti-inflammatory activity through inhibition of inflammatory mediators; antioxidant properties by scavenging free radicals; antimicrobial actions against bacteria and fungi via disruption of microbial cell walls or metabolic pathways; antihyperglycemic effects by influencing insulin secretion and glucose metabolism; antiulcer activity through mucosal protection and reduction of gastric acidity; antimalarial action via interference with parasite development; antiviral properties (including inhibition of viral DNA polymerase); antimutagenic effects that may reduce genetic mutations; anticancer potential through modulation of cell proliferation pathways[1][2][3][4][5][6]. Neem leaf extracts are used for various indications including wound healing (by promoting tissue regeneration), oral health (reducing dental plaque/gingivitis), skin diseases (antimicrobial/anti-inflammatory), diabetes management (lowering blood sugar levels), fever reduction (antipyretic effect), gastrointestinal ulcers (antiulcerogenic effect), arthritis/joint inflammation relief, blood purification/detoxification support[1][2][3][4][5]. However, most uses are based on traditional practice or preclinical studies—robust clinical evidence remains limited.
