Overview

Azanidazole is a nitroimidazole derivative and small molecule antiprotozoal agent primarily used in gynecology for the treatment of trichomonal infections such as vaginal trichomoniasis. It acts as an imidazole antitrichomonal drug and is classified under gynecological anti-infectives and antiseptics. Azanidazole exerts its effect by undergoing reduction of its nitro group within susceptible protozoa, leading to the formation of reactive intermediates that damage DNA and other critical biomolecules in the target organisms. This mechanism is similar to other nitroimidazoles. The drug has been reported to cause genotoxicity in liver and kidney tissues that cannot be separated from its biological activity[1][2][3][4][5].
