Overview

Azapentacene, often found as its salt form Azapentacene sodium polysulfonate, is a small molecule primarily used in ophthalmic solutions for the treatment of various types of cataracts, including senile, traumatic, congenital, and secondary cataracts. Its mechanism of action involves inhibiting the formation and action of quinoid substances, which are implicated in the disruption of aromatic acid metabolism and contribute to lens clouding. Additionally, Azapentacene protects the sulfhydryl groups of soluble lens proteins from oxidation and degradation, thereby preventing further damage. It also activates proteolytic enzymes present in the aqueous humor of the anterior chamber of the eye, which aids in the breakdown of cloudy proteins and the resorption of existing opacities. This multifaceted action helps to reduce lens cloudiness, improve metabolism, and enhance the trophic tissue of the eye, ultimately slowing or preventing the progression of cataracts.
