Overview

A combination immunosuppressive therapy consisting of azathioprine and cyclosporine. Azathioprine inhibits purine synthesis, affecting DNA and RNA production in rapidly dividing cells like T and B lymphocytes. Cyclosporine is a calcineurin inhibitor that prevents T cell activation by inhibiting the production of cytokines, particularly IL-2. This combination is used primarily in organ transplantation to prevent rejection and in treating certain autoimmune conditions like inflammatory bowel disease, particularly in steroid-resistant cases.
