Drug intelligence / Profile preview
This is a combination of two medications: azathioprine, an immunosuppressive agent, and febuxostat, a xanthine oxidase inhibitor. This combination is generally contraindicated due to a significant drug interaction. Febuxostat inhibits xanthine oxidase, which normally metabolizes azathioprine's active metabolite (6-mercaptopurine) into inactive products. This inhibition causes increased plasma concentrations of azathioprine or mercaptopurine, potentially leading to toxicity and myelosuppression.
