AZD1236 is a small molecule drug developed by AstraZeneca as a potent and selective inhibitor of the matrix metalloproteinases MMP‑9 and MMP‑12. These enzymes are implicated in inflammatory processes and tissue remodeling. The drug was originally investigated for the treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) to control symptoms and reduce disease progression. It has also been studied in clinical trials for cystic fibrosis and is being researched as a potential therapy to reduce secondary damage after spinal cord injury by suppressing inflammation, reducing edema, preserving nerve function, and promoting recovery. In preclinical models of spinal cord injury, AZD1236 demonstrated significant preservation of nerve function and improvement in movement following injury[1][4][5][6].
