Overview

AZD2479 is a small molecule inhibitor of myeloperoxidase (MPO), an enzyme primarily found in neutrophil granulocytes and monocytes that catalyzes the production of reactive oxygen species, such as hypochlorous acid. Developed by AstraZeneca, the drug was primarily investigated for the treatment of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). By inhibiting MPO, AZD2479 aims to reduce the oxidative stress and subsequent inflammatory tissue damage that drive airway remodeling and disease progression in COPD patients. Although it progressed through early-stage clinical trials to evaluate safety, tolerability, and pharmacodynamics, AZD2479 is no longer active in AstraZeneca's respiratory pipeline, with development having been discontinued in favor of other candidates within their MPO inhibitor program.
