AZD2816 is a recombinant adenoviral vector vaccine developed as a next-generation COVID-19 vaccine targeting variants of concern, specifically the Beta (B.1.351, South African) variant of SARS-CoV-2. It uses the same ChAdOx1 adenoviral vector platform as AZD1222 (ChAdOx1 nCoV-19/Vaxzevria), but encodes the full-length spike protein from the Beta variant. The vaccine is designed to induce strong humoral and cellular immune responses against SARS-CoV-2 variants and has been evaluated both as a primary series and as a booster in preclinical models and clinical trials[1][2][4][5][7]. Its mechanism involves delivering genetic material encoding the Beta spike protein into human cells to elicit an immune response.
