AZD3199 is an inhaled, ultra-long-acting, highly selective beta-2 adrenergic receptor agonist (LABA) developed by AstraZeneca for the treatment of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). It was designed to provide rapid onset and prolonged bronchodilation suitable for once-daily dosing. Preclinical studies demonstrated high selectivity (>1500-fold) for the human beta-2 adrenergic receptor over other subtypes, with potent in vivo activity and a favorable safety profile. Clinical trials showed that AZD3199 is rapidly absorbed after inhalation, has a long terminal half-life (up to 142 hours), linear pharmacokinetics, and was well tolerated in both healthy volunteers and patients with asthma or COPD. Despite promising results, development of AZD3199 for asthma and COPD was discontinued[1][2][6][7].
