AZD4117 is an investigational monovalent live attenuated influenza vaccine (LAIV) developed by AstraZeneca for the prevention of avian influenza caused by the H5N1 subtype. It utilizes a cold-adapted, temperature-sensitive master donor virus platform, similar to the technology used in the seasonal vaccine FluMist (Fluenz). This platform allows the attenuated virus to replicate only in the cooler environment of the nasopharynx, mimicking natural infection to induce a broad immune response—including mucosal IgA, serum antibodies, and cellular immunity—without causing systemic disease. AZD4117 is administered intranasally and has been evaluated in Phase I/II clinical trials, such as the PANDA study, to assess its safety and immunogenicity in healthy adults as part of pandemic preparedness efforts.
