AZD5658

AZD5658 is an oral small molecule glucokinase activator developed initially by AstraZeneca and now licensed to Conduit Pharmaceuticals. It acts as a glucokinase stimulant, enhancing the activity of glucokinase, an enzyme that plays a key role in glucose homeostasis by facilitating glucose phosphorylation in the liver and pancreas. This mechanism is intended to lower blood glucose levels and has been explored for antihyperglycemic effects. The drug was previously investigated for type 2 diabetes mellitus and obesity but development for these indications was discontinued after Phase 1 trials. Currently, Conduit Pharmaceuticals is advancing AZD5658 into Phase II clinical trials targeting autoimmune disorders[1][4][5][7]. As a new molecular entity, it represents a potential first-in-class therapy within its mechanism.
