AZD7270 is an investigational, orally administered, non-absorbed potassium binder developed by AstraZeneca for the treatment of hyperkalaemia. It was designed to bind potassium ions within the gastrointestinal tract, thereby increasing their excretion in the feces and reducing serum potassium concentrations. This mechanism is particularly relevant for patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) or heart failure who are at risk of life-threatening arrhythmias due to elevated potassium levels. AZD7270 was intended to offer a high-capacity, sodium-free alternative to existing binders like sodium zirconium cyclosilicate. Although it reached Phase I clinical trials (e.g., NCT05005559) involving healthy participants and patients with CKD, AstraZeneca discontinued its development for hyperkalaemia in late 2022.
