Overview

AZD8683 is an investigational small molecule drug developed by AstraZeneca as a long-acting muscarinic antagonist (LAMA) for the treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). It acts as a selective antagonist of the muscarinic acetylcholine receptor M3, leading to relaxation of airway smooth muscle and bronchodilation. The drug was designed for inhaled administration, including via nebulization and dry powder inhaler devices such as Turbuhaler. Clinical studies focused on its safety, tolerability, pharmacokinetics, and bronchodilatory effects in both healthy volunteers and COPD patients. Although it showed some efficacy in increasing FEV1 in COPD patients, development was discontinued after early-phase trials due to limited clinical benefit or adverse findings.
