AZD9708 is a novel, long-acting and highly selective β2-adrenoceptor agonist developed as a potential once-daily bronchodilator therapy for obstructive airways diseases such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). It demonstrates over 500-fold selectivity for the human β2-adrenoceptor compared to β1, and over 24-fold compared to β3. AZD9708 provides prolonged bronchoprotection and relaxes airway smooth muscle in preclinical studies. Unlike some β2-agonists, it shows a greater therapeutic margin with minimal effects on blood potassium at high multiples of its effective dose, and its side-effect profile may be related to β2-adrenergic receptor overstimulation rather than genotoxicity.[1][3]
