Overview

AZD9819 is an investigational small molecule drug developed as an inhaled neutrophil (leucocyte) elastase inhibitor. It was designed for the treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), aiming to slow disease progression by targeting underlying mechanisms associated with lung inflammation and damage. The drug acts by inhibiting neutrophil elastase, a protease implicated in tissue destruction and inflammation in COPD. AZD9819 underwent phase 1 clinical trials to assess its safety, tolerability, and pharmacokinetics following single and multiple ascending inhaled doses in healthy volunteers. Development was discontinued after phase 1 studies[2][3][4][5].
