Overview

Azelastine hydrochloride + diquafosol is a fixed-dose combination of two ophthalmic agents used primarily for the treatment of allergic conjunctivitis in patients who also have dry eye disease. Azelastine hydrochloride is a second-generation antihistamine that acts as a selective histamine H1 receptor antagonist and mast cell stabilizer, reducing allergic symptoms such as itching and inflammation by blocking histamine release and other inflammatory mediators. Diquafosol is a P2Y2 purinergic receptor agonist that stimulates tear fluid and mucin secretion on the ocular surface, improving tear film stability and alleviating dry eye symptoms. The combination targets both the allergic (itching/inflammation) and dry eye components of ocular surface disease, providing synergistic relief for patients with overlapping conditions[1][2][5].
