Overview

Azeloprazole (E3710, Z-215) is a novel proton pump inhibitor (PPI) developed for the treatment of acid-related gastrointestinal diseases such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). It acts by inhibiting the hydrogen potassium adenosine triphosphatase (H+/K+ ATPase) acid pump in gastric parietal cells, thereby suppressing gastric acid secretion. Azeloprazole is characterized by a long-lasting inhibitory effect on gastric acid secretion and is being investigated as a potential best-in-class therapy for patients who do not respond adequately to existing PPIs. The drug was discovered and initially developed by Eisai and has been co-developed with SFJ Pharmaceuticals and Zeria. Clinical development has reached Phase 2 for GERD/gastroesophageal reflux[1][3][5][6].
