Azficel-T is an autologous cell therapy consisting of expanded human dermal fibroblasts. It was the first cell therapy approved by the FDA for aesthetic indications, specifically for the improvement of moderate to severe nasolabial fold wrinkles in adults. The production process involves harvesting a small biopsy of the patient's own skin (typically from behind the ear), isolating the fibroblasts, and expanding them in vitro over several weeks before reinjecting them into the target area. Once injected, these fibroblasts produce extracellular matrix components, primarily collagen, to restore skin structure and volume. Beyond its approved aesthetic use, azficel-T has been investigated for therapeutic applications including the treatment of restrictive burn scars, vocal fold scarring (dysphonia), and acne scars. The asset was originally developed by Isolagen (which became Fibrocell Science) and is currently managed by Castle Creek Biosciences.
