Azidocillin is a narrow-spectrum, semisynthetic penicillin derivative and a member of the beta-lactam antibiotic class. It acts by binding to and inactivating penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), which are essential for bacterial cell wall synthesis. This inhibition leads to disruption of peptidoglycan cross-linking in the bacterial cell wall and ultimately causes bacterial cell lysis and death. Azidocillin is primarily used for treating infections such as inflammation of the throat, larynx, upper airways, middle ear (otitis media), sinuses (sinusitis), and palatine tonsils. It is excreted mainly unchanged in urine (50–70%), has high plasma protein binding (~84%), and a short half-life (~30 minutes). Side effects are similar to those seen with benzylpenicillin but tend to occur less frequently[7][9][10].
