Overview

Azilsartan is an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB) used primarily for the treatment of hypertension in adults. It is administered as the prodrug azilsartan medoxomil, which is rapidly hydrolyzed in the gastrointestinal tract to its active form, azilsartan. The drug works by selectively blocking angiotensin II from binding to the angiotensin II type 1 (AT1) receptor, thereby inhibiting vasoconstriction and aldosterone secretion. This leads to relaxation of blood vessels, reduced peripheral resistance, and lower blood pressure. Azilsartan has a high affinity for AT1 receptors and dissociates slowly compared to other ARBs, contributing to its longer duration of action. It does not require dose adjustment in patients with renal or hepatic dysfunction and can be used alone or with other antihypertensive agents.
